Raty on Mission, is one of the in-house projects that we worked on. In this project, we wanted to create an animation short, with potentially-commercialized characters, and entertaining action-filled story. It took us nearly 3 months to complete this short, from pre-production to post-production and also some extras that we enjoyed working on. Here, we are happy to share with you the making of Raty on Mission. Enjoy it~!

Casting the characters, many things needed to be taken into consideration, for example, whether the feature and body structure could convey the characteristic and potential that we were looking for. So, from a hundred of sketches, we have short-listed the characters to sixteen, then one.

Going through rounds of discussion, our concept artist will take in opinions given by rigger and animator (for example the thick limbs might limit the animation possibility, so slimmer limbs were suggested). While further developing the character to a better level, we always try to achieve balance between aesthetic and function.

Facial expression is very important, it can really spice up the characteristic within, and allowing the animator bring IT to live. With the help of facial expression sheet, rigging artist would be able to have a better idea while creating the blendshape on the 3d model. Our rigging artist always enjoy during this progress, it’s fun to have all sort of funny faces appeared on the character.

Having our Raty finalized, we then proceeded to the catapult design. Our engineer squeezed his brain to the limit and came out with the design of catapult. The finalized catapult gives an appearance of military plus “hi-tech” vehicle feel, which looks cool with our serious-for-nothing characters.
